A toothache can disrupt your life in ways you didn’t anticipate. That sharp pain when you bite down, the dull ache that keeps you up at night, or the sudden sensitivity to hot coffee all point to a problem deep within your tooth. When decay or damage reaches the pulp, the soft tissue inside your tooth where nerves and blood vessels live, a root canal may be able to save the tooth and stop the pain.
At Atlas Dental Specialists in Shadyside, Drs. Nicholas and Mara Mangini provide root canal treatment using advanced technology and techniques. As prosthodontists with a family-owned practice, we combine technical precision with a warm, comfortable environment. Our same-day dentistry capabilities with CEREC technology mean we can often complete both your root canal and final restoration in a single visit, helping you get back to your routine faster.
The procedure starts with numbing the area around your tooth. Once you’re comfortable, we create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp. Using specialized instruments and our operating microscope, we carefully remove the pulp tissue and clean the inside of the root canals. This removes the source of your pain and infection.
After cleaning, we shape and disinfect the canals, then fill them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This seals the canals, preventing bacteria from entering. We then place a restoration on the tooth. In most cases, we create your crown right here in our office using our CEREC milling technology, so you leave with a fully restored tooth the same day.
Tooth pain doesn’t always mean you need a root canal, but certain symptoms warrant immediate attention. Severe pain when chewing or applying pressure often indicates pulp damage. Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the source is removed, can signal nerve inflammation. Discoloration of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in nearby gums, or a persistent pimple-like bump on your gums are also warning signs.
Some people experience no symptoms at all. This is why regular dental checkups matter. We can spot problems early through X-rays and clinical examination before pain develops.
Modern root canal therapy has proven highly effective at saving teeth. According to research published by the National Institutes of Health, root canal treatments achieve success rates between 82 percent and 92 percent, with many treated teeth lasting a lifetime. These statistics reflect improvements in techniques, instruments, and materials over the past two decades.
Multiple factors influence treatment success. Teeth without pre-existing infections tend to heal more predictably than those with visible lesions on X-rays. The quality of the final restoration also plays a role. When a tooth receives a proper crown or filling after root canal treatment, it’s better protected from future problems. Our same-day crown capability ensures your tooth gets immediate, high-quality protection.
When faced with a damaged tooth, you have options beyond root canal treatment. Extraction removes the problem but creates new challenges. Missing teeth affect your bite, can cause neighboring teeth to shift, and may lead to bone loss in your jaw over time. Replacing an extracted tooth with a dental implant or bridge involves additional procedures, time, and cost.
Doing nothing isn’t really an option either. An infected tooth won’t heal on its own. The infection can spread to surrounding tissues and even enter your bloodstream, creating serious health risks. Addressing the problem early gives you the best chance of saving your natural tooth.
Most people return to normal activities the next day. Your tooth may feel slightly different for a few days as surrounding tissues adjust. Over-the-counter pain relievers typically manage any discomfort. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until you receive your permanent restoration if we place a temporary filling.
Some teeth need time to heal. If you had an infection before treatment, the area around your tooth’s root may take weeks or months to fully recover. This is normal. We’ll monitor your healing at follow-up visits to ensure everything progresses as expected.
A tooth with root canal treatment needs the same care as your other teeth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and keep up with your regular dental cleanings. With proper care and a quality restoration, your treated tooth can function normally for many years.
The crown or filling we place protects your tooth from fracture. Root canal treatment removes the pulp but leaves the tooth structure intact. However, teeth without pulp can become more brittle over time. A crown provides the reinforcement needed to prevent breaks, especially for back teeth that handle heavy chewing forces.
Our practice uses tools that weren’t available even a decade ago. Operating microscopes allow us to see inside your tooth with tremendous clarity, helping us locate and thoroughly treat all the canals. Digital X-rays provide detailed images while using 90 percent less radiation than traditional film. Our CEREC system creates custom crowns from solid blocks of ceramic in about an hour, eliminating the need for temporary crowns or multiple appointments.
These advances benefit you directly. Better visualization means more thorough treatment. Digital imaging reduces your radiation exposure. Same-day crowns mean fewer injections, less time away from work, and immediate protection for your tooth.
Root canal treatment costs vary based on which tooth needs treatment. Front teeth have fewer roots and typically cost less than molars. The price includes the procedure itself plus the final restoration. When you factor in the long-term costs of extraction and replacement, root canal treatment often proves more economical.
We participate with various insurance companies, including MetLife, Cigna, Principal, Ameritas, and UnitedHealthcare. Our team will verify your coverage and help you maximize your benefits. For patients without insurance, we offer flexible payment options and a membership club that provides discounts on treatments.
