For many denture wearers, the daily struggle with slipping, clicking, and discomfort quietly chips away at confidence, changes what you eat, and shapes how you show up in the world. Implant-supported dentures offer the security of dental implants with the practicality and affordability of a removable denture. Rather than choosing between basic dentures or a fully fixed solution, you can have both stability and convenience in a single treatment.
At Atlas Dental Specialists, implant-supported dentures are a core part of what we do. Our Pittsburgh team works closely with each patient to design a custom overdenture that fits precisely, functions reliably, and restores confidence across both Downtown Pittsburgh and Shadyside locations. We offer the full range of dental implant solutions, and implant-supported dentures sit right in the middle of that spectrum as one of our most requested services.
Implant-supported dentures, also called overdentures, are removable prosthetic devices that snap onto dental implants rather than simply resting on your gums. This distinction matters far more than it might seem. Where traditional dentures rely on gum contact and adhesives for retention, implant-supported dentures attach to titanium posts that fuse with your jawbone, creating a stable foundation that won’t shift when you talk, laugh, or eat.
Typically, two to four implants per arch provide enough support, though the exact number depends on your bone structure and treatment goals. The implants integrate with the surrounding bone over time, providing stimulation that prevents the bone loss often seen in long-term conventional denture wearers. According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, implant overdentures have demonstrated a 96.6% implant survival rate in patients with complex medical histories, showing how reliable this treatment is across a wide range of candidates.
Patients who make the switch from traditional dentures often describe the difference as significant. The improvements touch nearly every area of daily life, from mealtimes to social situations.
Implant-supported dentures can offer the following benefits:
Each of these benefits contributes to a treatment that pays for itself not just in terms of function but also in day-to-day quality of life.
Every treatment at Atlas Dental Specialists begins with a thorough evaluation, including 3D imaging to assess your bone structure and map out optimal implant placement. We take the time to understand your goals before developing a plan.
During the surgical phase, we place two to four titanium implants per arch in strategic positions based on your jaw anatomy and prosthetic design. Many patients receive temporary dentures on the same day as surgery, so there’s no need to go without teeth during the healing period. Over the next three to six months, the implants undergo osseointegration, a process in which the surrounding bone fuses to the implant surface, creating a stable, lasting anchor.
Once your implants have fully integrated, we take precise impressions to fabricate your custom overdenture. The denture is carefully designed to connect securely to the implants and fit comfortably in your mouth. When the final denture is complete, we attach it, verify fit and function, and walk you through how to remove, clean, and reattach it properly at home.
Maintaining your overdenture is straightforward and helps keep the implants and denture in place longer. Remove the denture each night and clean it with a soft brush and denture cleanser. Avoid regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive. Clean the attachment sites and surrounding gum tissue with a soft toothbrush, and always rinse the denture before reinserting.
The attachment components inside the denture gradually wear and typically need replacement every 12 to 18 months to maintain good retention. Your denture may need relining every three to five years as natural gum changes occur. With consistent care and regular checkups, the implants themselves can last for decades.Â
Implant-supported dentures may be a strong fit if you currently wear traditional dentures and struggle with stability, are missing all teeth in one or both arches, or want improved function without committing to a fully fixed restoration. Patients who have had implant-supported dentures in the lower arch often return to add them to the upper arch as well after experiencing the stability they provide.
Good candidates have adequate bone density or are willing to undergo bone grafting for implants if needed. Reasonable overall health and a commitment to proper cleaning and maintenance are also important factors. During your consultation, we assess your bone structure and oral health thoroughly to determine whether implant-supported dentures are the right choice or whether another approach through our prosthodontic solutions would serve you better.
At Atlas Dental Specialists, Drs. Nicholas and Mara Mangini bring advanced prosthodontic training to every implant-supported denture case. Our practice offers the full continuum of tooth replacement options, from conventional dentures to all-on-x, and we work with each patient to find the right fit for their goals, health, and budget. We accept MetLife, Cigna, Principal, Ameritas, and UnitedHealthcare, and we offer flexible financing options to help make treatment accessible.
