During the surgical phase, we place the implants, usually two to four per arch for a removable denture and four or more for a fixed one, in positions based on your jaw anatomy and prosthetic design. Many patients receive temporary dentures on the same day as surgery, so there’s no need to go without teeth during the healing period. Over the next three to six months, the implants undergo osseointegration, a process in which the surrounding bone fuses to the implant surface, creating a stable, lasting anchor.
Once your implants have fully integrated, we take precise impressions to fabricate your custom denture. The denture is carefully designed to connect securely to the implants and fit comfortably in your mouth. When the final denture is complete, we attach it and verify fit and function. How you care for your denture depends on the type. A removable denture comes out each night for cleaning with a soft brush and denture cleanser. Skip regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Brush the attachment sites and surrounding gum tissue with a soft toothbrush, and rinse the denture before putting it back in. A fixed denture stays in, so you clean around and under it every day with a soft brush and a water flosser or floss threader, and professional cleanings at your checkups reach the areas you can’t.
On a removable denture, the attachment parts inside the denture wear gradually and typically need replacement every 12 to 18 months to keep a snug fit, and the denture may need relining every three to five years as your gums change. With consistent care and regular checkups, the implants themselves can last for decades.
Implant-supported dentures may be a strong fit if you currently wear traditional dentures and struggle with stability, are missing all teeth in one or both arches, or have failing teeth that need to come out.
